Practice makes perfect, especially with these!

It’s amazing how easy it is to rely on technology. Our oven back home, for instance, was electric. It had the spiffy digital temperature reading and magically baked everything the way I wanted it to.

I love that oven. I miss it. I dream about it at night.

Especially when good intentions lead to burnt cheesecake bars. Ironically, I’ve actually blogged about this recipe on Around Hawaii before. A simple recipe with amazing results. This is what they were supposed to look like. This is what they ended up looking like:

I ended up cutting only the inner softer areas and sending the practically crispy outer ring to the trash.

I’m going to go ahead and convince myself that practice makes perfect, and tell my coworkers that they’re going to have to hit the gym twice as hard with all the practicing I’ll be bringing in to the office! Nothing like the holidays to stir up the baking itch.

That being said, I’ll share the recipe now. Along with what I believe to be my errors:

  1. Too much whisking. My batter was like a scene from bubble bobble. After the nutella and cream cheese are combined, stir don’t beat!
  2. Sifting the powdered sugar will help prevent clumps in the nutella batter.
  3. Baked too long. The edges were burnt. I left it in longer because the middle looked undercooked, but the longer it sits on the counter, cooling, the more normal the middle looks.
The recipe is originally a Paula Deen recipe that has made it’s way to Plain Chicken, then to Let’s Dish¬†and finally to Lovin’ from the Oven¬†before making it my kitchen. I love how recipes travel the world via food blogs. I have no idea how the heck our grandmas did it pre-internets! On to the recipe:
Cake:

  • 1 package devil’s food cake mix
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 cup butter, melted
Filling:

  • 1 (8 oz.) package cream cheese, softened
  • 1 cup Nutella
  • 3 eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1/2 cup butter, melted
  • 1 (16 oz.) box powdered sugar

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
  2. Mix together the cake mix, egg, and butter until well combined. Pat the mixture into the bottom of a lightly greased 9×13 baking pan.
  3. For the filling: Beat the cream cheese and Nutella until creamy.
  4. Stir in the eggs, vanilla, and butter. Slowly add the powdered sugar until incorporated. Spread the Nutella mixture over the pressed cake batter.
  5. Bake for 40 to 50 minutes. The center should still be a little gooey, so don’t over bake!

    • I have some pretty terrible baking moments, too, so don’t worry! Just last night I had to put something back into the oven (after it cooled!) because I realized it wasn’t done. >< Luckily it came out okay. Haha. Good luck with your cooking and baking! Hope you can make a veggie version of your chili when we’re home! hehehe. <3
