(Please don’t tell Rk)
When I heard an all-vegan restaurant opened up, I knew I had to try it. Unfortunately, I let time get the best of me. Then I let my short attention span get the best of me. Let’s just say, this was before I started reading Getting Things Done. Hehe. In any case, months flew by, and before I knew it, they were opening ANOTHER restaurant. Another year probably would’ve passed had it not been forĀ @kyleepuu organizing the impromptu meetup a few weeks ago!
It was Good Friday, and since she had given up meat for lent, we were all ready for some meat-look-alike magic.
Magic you ask? Double-take the featured image above. That right there…totally not chicken. Don’t believe me? Look again. The “bone” is not a bone at all, it’s sugarcane!
Magic I tell you.
I got there a little late, and got a sneak peek at the good stuff everyone else ordered. Then I proceeded to order pretty much everything they ordered, except for two people instead of three. Hahaha.
Guru Curry: organic tofu, taro, potatoes, onions, and carrots in a coconut curry sauce. I’m not a fan of coconut, but the flavor is very subtle here. Love how they threw taro into the mix, the texture combo’d with the curry was perfect!

Lemon grass Hawaiiana on the left: Soy protein with lemongrass, cucumber, and tomatoes.
Sweet & Sour Hapa on the right: Mixed veggies, organic tofu and soy protein mixed in a sweet & sour sauce.
For those of you that miss sweet & sour chicken: get your fix here. It was tangy sweet and the deep fried soy protein chicken things were crispy on the outside.

Summer Rolls: Mock shrimp (yam root), salad, organic tofu, veg ham, and rice noodles wrapped in rice paper. Served with a peanut sauce.
These were amazing! The mock shrimp was a nice touch, and a double win for me, since I’m allergic to shellfish. The thing that won me over here, though, would have to be the veg ham. It gave me the “something in this taste realllly good, but I have no idea what it is” thought. Perhaps Umami?
Saved the best for last.
Crispy chicken. Actually, I’m not even sure if that’s what it was called. I just know that it was amazing. Hands down the best fake meat I’ve ever had, and trust me, I’ve tried a LOT.

Check out that texture!
Okay. It totally didn’t fool the non-veggie that was eating with me, but for someone that hasn’t had chicken in over a year, it hit the spot!
Mmmmm. I’m getting hungry all over again.

Big thanks to @kyleepuu, @mikemouse, @anotherplate808, @docrock and @johngarcia for going Vegan for the day (or however long it lasted hehe).

I had no idea that Loving Hut opened up in Hawaii! I was at their Palo Alto place in February and just hit up their San Francisco WestField location when I was there for a conference earlier this month. Good stuff.
What was the “bone” in that crispy chicken drumstick? If it was edible that would be awesome!
Yes! There’s actually two locations, and we haven’t had a chance to try out the other one yet (I heard they have chicken katsu, which Ryan is drooling over). The “bone” was sugarcane!
