Okay, I don’t usually do the tumblr type blog on here and repost to other blogs, but when I read the Baking Bites blog this morning, I decided I had to.
It’s funny when you think about it, but I’ve never stopped to ask what Red Velvet cake is. I always just ran with the assumption that it was chocolate cake with tons of red food coloring in it.
Which, when you think about it, isn’t the smartest assumption since it doesn’t really taste like chocolate cake. Haha.

“…Most red velvet cakes, in a nod to the traditional origin story of the cake, contain buttermilk and a very small amount of cocoa powder. These ingredients give the cake a subtle, yet distinctive and delicious flavor that is not quite chocolate and not quite plain vanilla. The cake is usually topped off with a generous amount of cream cheese frosting, which adds even more flavor to the cake and gives it a high contrast red and white finish.”
There you have it folks.
Red velvet: Not quite chocolate, not quite vanilla, but absolutely delish!

Aw shucks. Brad claims he doesn’t like any type of cake unless it’s red velvet, and I always argued to him that it’s chocolate cake with a ton of red food coloring.
Oh well, he’ll never have to read this post.
Ahhahaa! At least I know I’m not alone in this red food coloring bit.
Thank you, very informative!
i vote for chocolate with red food coloring. i reject that other persons reality!
Hahhaa! You have to admit it doesn’t fully taste like straight choco cake.
