Sushi.
The word in itself scares some people away. They imagine things like super slimy raw fish, salty fish eggs, octopus, or the sometimes deadly fugu.
But here, in Hawaii, sushi can take on an entirely different meaning. For this theme lunch, we decided to bring whatever food we thought would go great with rice, and wrap it all up in korean-style nori (seaweed).
After the other week’s sandwich theme lunch, we reminded each other that we’re doing this to save money. (ie: don’t buy epic amounts of pastrami from Sam’s Club) Overall, I think we have been. We usually have enough lefties for lunch on Friday, and no one’s been left feeling hungry!
On to the good stuff!
I was running late and by the time I got to our lunch room, they had already set the table.
The spread: Egg, cucumber, smoked salmon, shoyu poke, spicy ahi poke, avocado.
(If you squint, you can see the container of crab/mayo in the back of the middle photo. There’s also shoyu/sugar spam and ginger somewhere, but I was so hungry I forgot to catch it in the photo)
I had leftover egg after I made the one pictured above, so I made a quick tamagoyaki with nori:
Another coworker came late, but surprised us with a HUGE plate of Char Siu. Not the ordinary for sushi, but the meat-a-tarians didn’t seem to mind. Char Siu sushi, apparently, ftw.
The best part was watching everyone’s sushi making skills! The various techniques included:
The pile up the fillings and then make sushi as you eat technique:
The make each sushi first technique: (There’s the spam!)
The “I used all my nori so I’m just eating it with rice” technique:
I’ll admit, it gets messy.
Yes, that’s salt on my oddly shaped fingers right there *licks fingers*
But the mess is totally worth it.
Special thanks to Donna for bringing us chocolate goodies:
And to the C-T combo for bringing cupcakes and twinkies!!
(I really should’ve turned them over to hide the nutrition facts before I took this photo!)
We’re doing Mexican today, but are starting to run short on ideas for the coming months. Anyone do theme lunches at their offices/workplace and want to share some with us?

The sushi looks so good and now I’m hungry for it but it has to be in the korean nori after seeing yours.
Not sure if you’re allowed to cook in your building, but once we did like am omelette station. Where you can have a couple people bring maybe 4-5 eggs, and someone bring onions, or spam cubes, spinach, etc.? I guess the only downfall is it might take a while to cook up everyone’s specialty.
P.S. what camera are you using for your photos? You have a fancy schmancy one now?
Great idea! I think we can cook in our building, just a matter of making someone pull the short stick and cook. hahaha!
Same camera that I’ve had for a while. Just a point & shoot, but for my needs, works great! Canon SD720.
I’ve been thinking about upgrading, but will have to save up! hehe.
Man the photos look so good! I use my BB camera, only because it’s so much easier to email the pics to me, rather than plugging in my cord and such.
I use the BB for the photoblog from time to time, but I also picked up an Eye-fi card so I don’t have to do the whole card reader thing. Totally contributes to my laziness, but I love it anyway! Hahaha.
